Corydalis ambigua contains more than 20 different alkaloids including tetrahydropalmatine, hemical derivatives have been studied as potential ways to increase pain tolerance and for treating drug addiction.

This constituent imparts a sedative and analgesic action (1 to 10% that of opium but shares a naloxone-resistant analgesic action), with studies showing it is a dopamine receptor antagonist and is non-addictive, but tolerance can still be developed from administration.
